about

After Sweet Madness re-formed as Next Exit, Static Cling was the first new song with lead guitarist Greg Morlan. A 1981 recording of this song was featured on the LP Seattle Syndrome II and received national airplay on a nationally syndicated punk/wave radio show. This version was recorded in Seattle and put out on Next Exit's 1983 LP Metropolitan West.

lyrics

You think you’ve got hang-ups now
Wait till she starts calling you
Catch as catch can catch somehow
Random noise now noise now

What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?

Nothing but static, nothing but static
Static Cling
Nothing but static, nothing but static
Static Cling

You think you’ve got headaches now
Wait till he starts grinding through
Opposites attract please no non not
You’re so negative, negative

What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?
What do I get from you?

Nothing but static, nothing but static
Static Cling
Nothing but static, nothing but static
Static Cling

You don’t really want me
You just want me to want you
And you oughta be in somebody’s song
You oughta be in somebody’s song
You oughta be in somebody’s song
But not mine

(Gregor, Morlan)

about

Next Exit Seattle, Washington

In 1981 Sweet Madness ditched Spokane for Seattle and changed their name to Next Exit.

The new lineup featured a more guitar-driven sound, with lead guitarist Greg Morlan replacing keyboardist John Robison.

For their first live show, they played at a Drive-In Movie Theater on the roof of the concession stand.

Static Cling was the first song they wrote with the new lineup.
